Yahoo!! Satsuki here! I’m bringing you our first release, ViVid’s Chapter 17! We are a scanlating group that is built to give you new chapters of the 4th (spinoff) Nanoha Series “Vivid”
I’m really new to the scanlating business. And I promise to do my job diligently. So please wait for our releases monthly! For now I would like to apologize that this release is quite late. I’m sorry. But from now on I’ll try my best to release the chapters fast!

Great work. Vivid really did take a very different direction than the series before it. Great to know we’ve got dedicated scanlators.

While not in any way to disparage the work you’ve done, since I couldn’t have achieved it. There are a few quibbles on titles and grammar
Haou – Hegemon

Raitei -King of Thunder, Thunder Emperor [possibly Queen of Thunder, Thunder Emperess, but I don’t think we know which yet]
Also some of the grimmar seemed stilted, in each case the second line seems to me a smoother alternative.

If Payapaya was working on this why are you doing it? I see you’re “really new to the scanlating business” so let me explain something. You don’t just snatch someone series from under them while they’re working on it. If you feel they’re doing a poor job and you can do better then perhaps you should ask permission to take it over or work out a joint project with them. I do believe it’s still listed on PP’s current project list so maybe you should double think this especially considering I don’t see any improvement on the quality of work. http://www.payapaya-scans.com/club-activities

It would have been nice if someone had contacted us or even Wings of Yuri (the original group scanlating this series) since we (formerly Tsundere Translations and now Payapaya Scans) actually took this series over from them when they dropped it at chapter 12 and have been working on it since mid-summer.
I hate doing double work but the releases on MangaFox (which came out several months after we announced we were taking up the series) are very low quality and chapter 17 is not much better. Adam had to post-release proofread this for you and nearly every page has a correction. Not a single SFX is redrawn and most of them aren’t even translated. Why even bother putting the text into the bubbles if you are not going to take the time to make it look good? Isn’t it better to just give out a txt file translation with the raws? Some of the character names in your version are taken from the Chinese scanlation of Vivid and not the naturalized English names or the original Japanese names. For continuity it is best to either naturalize everything into English or keep with the original Japanese instead of using a third language that isn’t even present in the original release.
I am glad that people are finally taking an interest in Vivid but please use a little common scanlation etiquette and contact the group that is doing this series, ESPECIALLY when you obviously know they are actively working on it as you linked to our chapter 16 release.
Payapaya has a total redraw policy so chapters like 13 and 14 take quite some time just in editing process because our editor is actually removing all the Japanese text and redrawing the art and SFX while minimizing the loss of original art and style. We have a proofreading and quality checking process which also takes time once the script and scanlation is done respectively. I personally scan all the chapters because the raws from Nanoha.cn and other sites are usually poor quality and/or missing the lead pages and cover art (as with this chapter).
As for our Vivid release status:
13 is in editing
14 is in PR
15 is in translation
17 is in editing
18 is in queue for scanning

Possibly and very simply because the translator [die_hard_RPGamer] started doing translations of this series after Wings of Yuri gave up at chapter 12 and before Payapaya produced the one episode they have done.
While he may not have distributed them in a usual manner [Posting them to MangaFox more or less directly IIRC] he was still producing translations when no one else was.
It also isn’t like there haven’t been multiple versions of this series before, more than half the chapters have two or three translations from different groups.

If payapaya wasn’t getting anything out at all then I think that they have no right in getting mad over this in any way shape or form. Payapaya couldn’t get it done so someone who could do it stepped up and did it. I would rather see this done by vividtrans than by a bunch of whiners who translate slower than frozen molasses. Down with payapaya long live vividtrans!

what you need to see is that payapaya may have been “working” on it but they sure as hell weren’t getting anywhere with it so let me explain something to you, payapaya wasn’t doing anything with this at all so someone who did care about it took it up but, I’ll be fine with payapaya doing it if they can get these out faster. It wasn’t just snatched out from under them because they weren’t even on top of it and vividtrans doesn’t need permission to do something payapaya can’t get done.

Yo, die_hard_RPGamer here, the one who did the original translation on mangafox, or the “snatcher” as you kindly put it, which I still don’t think is an appropriate description of my action really. I did not snatch their scans, script, nor did I take credit for any of the work they’ve done, in fact I did not know of their existance until 09/21/2010 and I’ll gladly wager all the money I have in my backpocket (which isn’t a lot but you get the picture) that the series Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha is in fact not a property of payapaya-scans.com, so please enlighten me as to how I stole anything under them, and why I am obligated to request their permission to either translate the series, or to translate the series in conjunction with them. All I knew at the time was:
1. I like the Nanoha Vivid series very much,
2. There is a 3 month gap in which nothing is released and no talk of any actions or movements,
and that’s enough to get me started.
I did not think that Payapaya is performing a poor job, nor did I think that I could do a better job than Payapaya, not when I don’t even know of their existance, and not now after I’ve seen the chapter that they released. However, their release did come AFTER I released mine independently, and this is a simple continuation of what I started. HOWEVER, I do apologize if by my actions I have messed up their release scheduel, or any other inconvenience I’ve caused, but it was done in ignorance, not intentionally.
I’ll freely admit that at the time of translating the series I don’t have a faintest idea on what “scanlation” is except that they put English in word bubbles of Japanese manga, and “scanlators” are just a bunch of people who did exactly that, but I’m working on it to become less ignorant and n00bish in this “scanlating business”.

I am die_hard_RPGamer, and I guess the one who started this mess altogether. I apologize for the ignorance and recklesnness with which I translated and released the chapters on MangaFox.
The poor quality of work on the chapters are obviously due to my inexperience in the field and my lack of skill, and I will take to heart the things you pointed out and improve upon them.
As for common scanlation etiquettes, to be honest I knew of none back then, so I ask your forgiveness if I failed to adhere to the common etiquettes of which I have no knowledge of at the time. For 3 months I’ve searched around for scanlations of Vivid, and nothing came up. “Solelo” has announced their retirement on Vivid and “Mugen no Oro” has been inactive on Vivid since February. That is why I started translating, armed with the little resources that I had then, MSPaint, some freeware image tools, and the scans of the chapters (however poor they may be but they are still scans). I truely did not know that there is still a group working on Vivid, and it would seem that most don’t since no advices, comments, notifications, or warnings came to me when I released chapter 13~16. I only knew of Payapaya after they released chapter 16, a couple of days later.
As for our current status, even if flawed as you pointed out above,
Chapter 13: done, re-release pending.
Chapter 14: done, re-release pending.
Chapter 15: done, re-release pending.
Chapter 16: done, no current actions planned.
Chapter 17: done.
Chapter 18: awaiting on translation.
All in all, I really don’t think that we’re doing too bad.
Thanks for wishing us luck, we will certainly need it (well, at least I do), and yes, I will learn to redraw and improve upon all the points that you mentioned. It’s difficult but I’m improving, slowly, I think. 🙂
