[VividTrans] ViVid Strike! – 01-04 SoftSubRedux (1280×720 x264 AAC)
We’re switching to softsubs for the TV run of ViVid Strike!, something we were planning on leaving for the bluray release but with the ever growing sizes of storage drives today, those extra megabytes just aren’t as big comparatively as they used to be. So with that, episodes 1-4 are being re-released with soft-subs to back-fill our original episodes. Hop on board and help seed these.
[VividTrans] ViVid Strike! – 05v2 SoftSubRedux (1280×720 x264 AAC)
We’ve also re-released Episode 05 in Softsubs, so if those are to your preference, it’s here for the taking! Future releases will be in softsubs as well, as we aim to be subbing master race-/shot.
Great =)

They probably want soft subs so that they can take your .ass file and use it to translate the show into their language

What is different between soft and hard subs?

Very nice, thanks!

“Hard subs” means the subs are “baked” into the video itself. “Soft subs” means they’re added into the file as actual text, in the form of a subtitle track. The advantage of soft subs is that, given a decent player or other software, you can turn them off (to take screenshots, cut the video for AMVs, …), extract and edit them (to translate them, change the font, …) and that there can be multiple different subtitle tracks on the same episode for the viewer to choose from. The advantage of hard subs is… well, not much, except that you can watch them on ancient players/devices that don’t support soft subs, I suppose.

Thank you, the blurry subs kinda annoyed me.

No excuse for these being 100MB+ larger just for the benefit of softsubs. Switching back to merchant’s version.

The previous versions were much smaller than raws because of the reencoding. I don’t know if Vivid Trans now use the original raws without change (which would be good for visual quality and cleanness), but if it is just 100 MB of difference, then it is not gonna end up bigger than Merchant, which is remux of raw too.

Thanks for considering the criticisms, BTW. It’s great that you switched to soft subs.
Also I don’t know if it won’t negatively affect your workflow, but I’d suggest to prefer Leopard Raws over Ohys Raws, if you are able to. Leopard raws encode comes out later, but has somewhat better quality with less compression artifacts. In some cases the timing/scenecuts are even the same, so the raws are interchangeable during subbing, but probably not always (it might just be a difference of few frames, easily adjustable in aegisub by shifting)

Full disclosure, as usual:
Personally, I’ve always preferred Leopard-Raws (though I couldn’t really put my finger on why; I mostly attributed it to habit). Previous episodes used their raws. The only reason I used Ohys’ this week is because of a strange turn of events that had me working on the episode before Leopard’s was even released. I was a good halfway through the episode before their release came out and after finally finishing, I was extremely tired and didn’t have it in me to compare the two raws for any timing discrepancies.
It’s nice to know that there was a legitimate reason I liked Leopard-Raws. I’ve never had a discerning eye for video quality, so I guess I just noticed it subconsciously. The quality of the subs has always been my priority (and why I caved and started working on this in the first place, even though I swore to myself I’d only ever be working on manga), so as long as there wasn’t anything really obviously wrong with the video, I will admit to it being beyond my notice.
Waiting for Leopard-Raws would not interrupt our workflow any more than my job already does most weeks, so I will take you up on that suggestion and stick to them from now on. Thanks!

For Episode 05 is there any difference between the hardsubs and the softsubs ? (I ask because you wrote V2 )

v2 will have the softsubs. Otherwise, if you don’t mind that distinction, just keep whichever you already downloaded until the bluray rips come out.
